Positioning Public Relations in Strategic Level

For the 13th times, Serikat Perusahaan Pers (SPS) Pusat held a workshop for to the practitioners of public relations (PR Officer) of government agencies, state-owned companies /enterprises, domestic private companies, multinationals, banks and universities.

This workshop was held in Bali on December 16 to 18 July 2012. The theme of this workshop is about Crisis Communications, Preparing for a crisis occurs, with the subtheme about counter opinion, the rights of response and responsibilities of public management.

There's something special about this workshop at Bali, each year  the PR workshop’s participants are always continues to grow, but the 13th workshop’s participants break the new record (the old record was at Batam in 2011 with 52 participants from 22 various institutions), with total participants are 61 people, came from 32 different agencies/isntitutions. Speakers are Ricardo Indra (General Manager Corporate Communication PT. Telkomsel), Agus Soedjono (Senior Manager Corporate Communication Sriwijaya Air), Budiman Tanuredjo (Wakil Pemimpin Redaksi harian KOMPAS), dan Dian Umar Anggraini (Konsultan PR).

Ricardo Indra and Agus Soedjono shared their daily experiences in handling media. Started from the customers complain, to the communication crisis. Some cases about the customers phone credits, and disconected network when the President of Indonesia – Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono were doing teleconverence to monitor the homecoming flow of Ramadhan in 2010. “With the well managed of strategic communication approach, we can through those crisis,” said Indra while smiling.

Meanwhile, Budiman Tanuredjo describes KOMPAS experiences in facing some counter opinion from the news informants. According to him, if a crisis arises in the end of the news, managed it well, dont be so hurry in bringing the confilct into justice. “If there is a wrong news, informant or public relations officer must straightening the fact and make contact with the related media’s editor. Personal and Informal approach with the media are more effective in balancing the news,” said Budiman.

As for Dian Anggraeni Umar in her presentation about “Strategic Crisis Management – Managing Public Opinion”, she consider to improve the relationship with the officials are very important. Its time for strategic communication that built by the public relations organization are in line with the corporation plan. “So when the communication crisis is going to happen, the company can through the crisis well by using the right strategy”, Dian adviced the workshop’s participants.

The next workshop, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia, on December 26 to 28 September 2012. Theme "Handling Crisis and Emergency Response", Subtema "Facing the Crisis Emergency moment, Managing Media during crisis, International Relations, and Management Demonstrator".
